Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Mestinon
Mestinon is a cholinesterase (an enzyme that metabolize acetylcholine) inhibitor. It acts by improving nerve impulses in muscles so that the muscles can work better to.
Therapeutic Uses of Mestinon
Mestinon is used in the treatment of myasthenia gravis. It may also be used in other medical conditions as your doctor decides.
Direction of use of Mestinon
Mestinon should be used as per direction of your doctor. If you have any question about the use of Mestinon, you should consult your doctor or use it as follows:
- Take Mestinon on full stomach or on empty stomach.
- If you get stomach upset or irritation, you should take it with food to reduce irritation of stomach.
If You Miss a Dose of Mestinon
If you miss a dose of Mestinon, take it as soon as possible. If you miss for long time and it is almost time for the next dose than skip the missed dose and continue taking Mestinon as regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses of Mestinon.
How to Store Mestinon
Mestinon should be stored at room temperature (68 to 77 degrees F or 20 to 25 degrees C). Keep it away from heat, moisture and light. Keep Mestinon out of reach of children and pets.

If you do not get any improvement of your symptoms or symptoms get worse after using Mestinon, you should consult your doctor. Mestinon should be taken by the patient only for whom it is prescribed and never shared with anyone.
Precautions to be Taken While Taking Mestinon
Mestinon should not be used if you have any of the following medical conditions and consult your doctor immediately:
- If you have allergy to any of the ingredients of Mestinon.
- If you are taking medicines like quinine or quinidine.
- If you are suffering from intestinal obstruction or urinary obstruction.
Some important notes about Mestinon:
- Pregnancy and lactation: if you are pregnant you should not take Mestinon and if you become pregnant while taking Mestinon, you should discuss about the risks and benefits of Mestinon during pregnancy. It is excreted in the breast milk and if you want to breast feed your baby or breast feeding our baby, than consult your doctor or other health care provider about the risk to your baby if you take Mestinon during breast feeding.
- Use Mestinon with extreme caution in children as the safety and effectiveness is not established in them.
- You should inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Mestinon before you go for any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery.
Possible Adverse Effects of Mestinon
There are certain side effects with Mestinon and you should inform if you get any serious side effects or any common and minor side effects become bothersome. The side effects of Mestinon are severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); headache, diarrhea, dizziness, seizure, hallucinations, mental or mood changes; severe nausea or vomiting, persistent nausea or vomiting; fast or slow heartbeat, shortness of breath; tinnitus or ringing in the ears; blue color of the fingers or toes, cold or pale fingers or toes; leg cramps and weakness; numbness or tingling of the hands, feet, or skin; chest pain and chest tightness, muscle pain etc.
