Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Nexium

Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor medicine and it acts by reducing the acid production in the stomach, thereby prevent ulceration in the stomach and intestine. It reduces acid secretion by preventing the hydrogen ion for production of acid.

Therapeutic Uses of Nexium

Nexium is used in the treatment of GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) and other diseases that causes excess production of gastric acid like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used in the treatment of peptic ulcer (due to infection with helicobacter pylori or H. pylori or may be due to NSAIDs) which is one of the commonest diseases of modern days, due to food habit. It is also used to promote healing of erosion of esophagus due to gastric acid in esophagus, in esophagitis.

Direction of use of Nexium

Take Nexium as per direction of your doctor or take it as orally with food or on empty stomach and take it at the same time every day. If you have any question about the direction of use of Nexium or its dosing, you should consult your doctor or other health care provider.

If You Miss a Dose of Nexium

If you miss a dose of Nexium, take it as soon as you can remember it. If you miss a dose of Nexium and it is almost time for the next dose, than skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take an extra dose of Nexium to make up the missed dose.

How to Store Nexium

Nexium should be stored at temperature 68 to 77 degrees F or 20 to 25 degrees C. Store it away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the medicine out of reach of children.

Nexium should be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed. Do not share it with other people. If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, consult with your doctor immediately.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Nexium

Do not use Nexium if you have any medical condition listed here and consult your doctor immediately:

If you have allergy to Nexium or any of the ingredients of it or other similar medicines like omeprazole, pantoprazole etc.
If you are taking anti HIV medicines (HIV protease inhibitor) like atazanavir.

Some important notes about Nexium:

Nexium may cause drowsiness and the drowsiness may be more prominent if alcohol or certain medicines are taken along with Nexium. Use Nexium with caution. Do not drive or perform unsafe and risky works while taking Nexium, till you know that you do not react with Nexium.
If you are woman and pregnant, you should consult your doctor before taking Nexium. You should discuss about the risks and benefits of taking Nexium during pregnancy. It is not clear if Nexium is found in breast milk, but you should consult your doctor before breast feeding your baby.
Nexium should be used with caution in Asian patients as they have more chances of getting side effects.
Use Nexium very cautiously for children as the safety and effectiveness of Nexium is not established yet.
Nexium can interfere with some lab tests and you should inform your doctor before doing any lab test that you are taking Nexium.
You should consult your doctor if you have any symptoms like bleeding ulcer (black, tarry stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds); or if you experience throat pain, chest pain, severe stomach pain, or trouble swallowing etc.

Possible Adverse Effects of Nexium

The common side effects of Nexium are headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, gas, stomach pain, pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site etc. If any of these common side effects become persistent or bothersome you should consult your doctor.
You should consult your doctor if you get any serious side effects with Nexium. the serious side effects of Nexium are severe allergic reactions manifested by rash, hives, itching, breathing difficulty, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, unusual hoarseness etc; chest pain, fast heartbeat (palpitation), fever, chills, or sore throat; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness etc.
