Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Nimotop

Nimotop is a calcium channel blocker medicine. It blocks calcium entry to the cells of blood vessels and cause prevent contraction of the smooth muscles of blood vessels thus cause relaxation.

Therapeutic Uses of Nimotop

Nimotop is used in the improvement of symptoms caused by spasms as a result of a brain hemorrhage (ruptured blood vessels). It can also be used in the treatment of high blood pressure.

Direction of use of Nimotop

Take Nimotop exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If the pills can not be swallowed the liquid inside the capsule may be taken out and given through a feeding tube. For getting the best possible result the medicine should be started within 4 days of the brain hemorrhage and given every 4 hours for 3 weeks.

If You Miss a Dose of Nimotop

You should take Nimotop at the scheduled time, but if you miss the dose of Nimotop, than take it as soon as possible. You should not take Nimotop, if it is time for the next dose; you should not take it and skip the dose, than continue it as scheduled for regular dosing. Never take double dose of Nimotop if you miss a dose.

How to Store Nimotop

Nimotop should be stored at room temperature (between 59 to 86 degrees F or 15 to 30 degrees C). Store it in a cool, dry and dark place in a tightly closed container. Do not store Nimotop in your bathroom and keep it out of reach of children.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Nimotop

  • Inform your doctor if you have any of the medical problems like heart problems, lung disease, allergies do some medicines.
  • Nimotop should be used in pregnancy only if it is clearly indicated. If you are pregnant discuss about the risk and benefits of using Nimotop.
  • Nimotop is found in the breast milk or not is not clear but breast feeding should not be done during treatment with it. If you have to breast feed you should consult your doctor before breast feeding.

Possible Adverse Effects of Nimotop

  • Nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, headache, slowed pulse or flushing are common side effects that occur during the first few days of treatment with Nimotop and is due to the adjustment of the body to the medication. If any of these common side effects become bothersome or persistent you should consult your doctor.
  • Inform your doctor if you have any of the serious side effects like: depression, mood changes, skin rash, swelling hands, swelling of feet, shortness of breath, wheezing, muscle cramps, unusual bruising or bleeding etc.
  • If you get any side effect that is not listed above you should consult your doctor immediately.
