Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Norpace CR

Norpace CR is an antiarrhythmic medication. It helps the heart to return to normal and maintain a normal heart rhythm. It also slows down the fast heart rate.

Therapeutic Uses of Norpace CR

Norpace CR is used in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.

Direction of use of Norpace CR

The dose of Norpace CR depends on the condition of the patient. Follow the instructions given by your doctor and also the instructions given in the label of the medication. Do not change the dose of Norpace CR without asking your doctor. The number of pills you take depends on the strength of the pill and also type of preparation (regular or controlled release preparations etc.).

For treatment of arrhythmias: for regular short acting oral dosage form like capsules of 100 mg to 15 mg to be taken every 6 to 8 hours for adults. In children it is usually taken as 6 mg to 30 mg per kilogram of body weight per day in 4 divided doses or every 6 hourly. For long acting oral preparations like controlled release preparations or extended release preparations the dose is 200 mg or 400 mg every 12 hourly in adults and these preparations are not recommended in children.

If You Miss a Dose of Norpace CR

If you miss a dose of Norpace CR, take it as soon as you can remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, than skip the missed dose and take the next dose as regularly scheduled. Leave an interval of at least 4 hours between doses of regular capsules and 6 to 8 hours between doses of extended release capsules. Do not take 2 doses at a time.

How to Store Norpace CR

Norpace CR should be stored below 30 degree Centigrade (86 degrees F). Store it is a dry, cool and dark place. Do not store it in bathroom. Keep the drug out of reach of children.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Norpace CR

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking regular alcohol, drinks with caffeine or you smoke as these may affect the action of Norpace CR.
  • You should inform your doctor or dentist about the use of Norpace CR before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery.
  • Do not stop Norpace CR suddenly without consulting your doctor or other health care provider. If you need to change the dosing also you should ask your doctor.
  • Norpace CR may cause drowsiness and you should not drive, perform duties which need constant attention and monitoring while taking this medication. You can do these works mentioned here if you are certain that Norpace CR do not cause any sedation or drowsiness in you.
  • The medicine may cause heatstroke during exercise or other activities and hot weather and you should avoid all these during treatment of Norpace CR.
  • If you are woman and you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. This medicine is secreted in breast milk. Do not breast feed while taking this medicine. Discuss with your doctor if you want to breast feed your baby.

Possible Adverse Effects of Norpace CR

You should report if you get any side effect that is listed below:

  • Change in the amount of urine passed, or difficulty passing urine, headache, confusion, skin rash, itching; yellowing of the skin or eyes; lightheadedness and fainting spells; signs of infection like fever, chills, or sore throat; chest pain, palpitation; difficulty in breathing; muscle weakness, swelling of feet or legs, unusual weakness and tiredness; unusual weight gain, unusual hunger, cool and pale skin etc.

The following side effects usually do not need medical attention, but if they become persistent and troublesome you should consult your doctor:

  • Dizziness, drowsiness; blurring of vision, dry eyes, dry mouth and dry throat; constipation, or diarrhea (less likely); nausea, vomiting; sexual difficulties (reduced desire and performance) stomach pain or bloating etc.
