Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Phenergan
Phenergan is an anti histaminic. It acts by blocking the histamine receptors where histamine acts and cause clinical problems.
Therapeutic Uses of Phenergan
Phenergan is used in the treatment of allergy and symptoms of allergy like congestion of nose, hives etc. It is also used for prevention of nausea and pain during surgery and after surgery. Phenergan is also used in prevention of motion sickness and to produce light sleep. It is not useful in treatment of asthma. It can also be used in other medical conditions as decided by your doctor.
Direction of use of Phenergan
Check the label provided with the medicine for exact dosing instructions or follow as your doctor told you. You should take Phenergan orally, with food or on empty stomach. If you get gastric irritation or stomach upset, take it with food to reduce irritation and upset of stomach.
If you are using Phenergan for motion sickness, you should take it at least 30 to 60 minutes before starting your journey or travel.
If You Miss a Dose of Phenergan
If a dose of Phenergan is missed when you are taking it regularly, than take it as soon as you can remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to you regular dosing schedule. Never take 2 doses of Phenergan to compensate for the missed dose.
How to Store Phenergan
Phenergan should be stored at room temperature. Do not store it at your bathroom. Keep Phenergan away from sunlight, heat and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Phenergan
Do not use Phenergan if you have any of the following medical problems and consult your doctor immediately:
- If you have allergy to any of the ingredients of Phenergan.
- If you are also taking astemizole, cisapride, terfenadine, tramadol etc. for any medical condition.
- If you have severe central nervous system depression or if you are in coma.
Some medical conditions may interact with Phenergan. You should inform your doctor if you have any medical conditions that may interact with Phenergan. The following medical conditions may interact with Phenergan:
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast feeding your baby.
- If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or any other substance.
- If you are taking any prescription medicine or nonprescription medicine (over the counter medicine), herbal preparation, or any dietary supplements.
- If you regularly consume large amounts of alcohol.
- If you have nervous system problems, bone marrow depression, heart problems, blood disease, glaucoma (increased eye pressure known as intraocular pressure), low blood pressure, liver problems, prostate problems, Parkinson disease, seizures, Reye syndrome etc.
Some medicines may interact with Phenergan. You should inform your doctor if you are taking any medicine that may interact with Phenergan. The following medicines may interact with Phenergan:
- Phenergan's effectiveness may be decreased due to charcoal or lithium.
- Bromocriptine, epinephrine, levodopa, pergolide etc. drugs effectiveness may be decreased by Phenergan.
- ACE inhibitors (like enalapril used in treatment of hypertension), haloperidol, lithium, meperidine, metrizamide, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) like phenelzine; naltrexone, polypeptide antibiotics ( like actinomycin), or trazodone because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Phenergan.
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (like enalapril), astemizole, cisapride, general anesthetics like thiopental; methyldopa, terfenadine, or tramadol because side effects of these drugs, like low blood pressure and seizures may occur.
Possible Adverse Effects of Phenergan
Like any other medicine Phenergan have some common side effects and some serious and uncommon side effects. If you get less serious side effects of Phenergan, you should only consult your doctor if these common side effects become persistent and bothersome. The less serious and common side effects of Phenergan are:
- Nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased or decreased blood pressure, occasional blurring of vision, skin rash, sleepiness or lethargy, vomiting etc.
If you get any serious side effects of Phenergan, you should consult your doctor immediately. The following are the serious and less common side effects of Phenergan:
- Sensitivity to light (photosensitivity), uncontrolled muscle movements, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice) etc.
