Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Reminyl

Reminyl is a cholinesterase inhibitor drug. It acts by increasing the brain chemical acetylcholine in the brain and reduce the symptoms of dementia in patients with Alzheimer disease.

Therapeutic Uses of Reminyl

Reminyl is used for treatment of Alzheimer disease with mild to moderate dementia (impairment of memory or judgment, abstract thinking, changes in personality etc.)

Direction of use of Reminyl

Reminyl should be taken as per direction of your doctor. Take Reminyl orally in the morning and evening along with meals, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. You should drink extra fluid while taking Reminyl. To get the maximum benefit from Reminyl you should take it regularly and at the same time each day, which will help you remember to take it and give you maximum benefit. Take Reminyl on a regular schedule and keep taking it even if you feel well without missing a dose of it. If you have any question about the use of Reminyl, you should ask your doctor.

If You Miss a Dose of Reminyl

If you are taking Reminyl regularly and miss a dose of it, you should take it as soon as you remember it. You should skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose and never double up the dose of Reminyl to catch for the missed dose.

How to Store Reminyl

Reminyl should be stored at temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). But it can be stored between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) for a brief period of time. Store it away from heat, moisture, and light and do not store in the bathroom. Keep Reminyl out of reach of children.

Reminyl should be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed and not shared with other people. If you do not get any improvement you should consult your doctor. if you have any doubt about Reminyl you should ask your doctor or other health care provider.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Reminyl

Do not use Reminyl if you are suffering from any of the conditions given below and consult your doctor immediately:

  • If you are allergic to any of the ingredients used in Reminyl.
  • If you have decreased liver function or kidney function.

Important notes about Reminyl:

  • Reminyl may cause dizziness, drowsiness, fainting etc. and all these effects may be worse if you take it along with alcohol or certain medicines. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks that need constant attention and monitoring until you are sure that you do not get dizziness, drowsiness, fainting etc. with Reminyl.
  • Do not take more than the recommended dose or take double dose of Reminyl without asking your doctor.
  • At the beginning of treatment with Reminyl, you doctor will increase the dose of Reminyl slowly over time. This may help to decrease the risk of certain side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea etc. Follow the dosing schedule prescribed by your doctor strictly.
  • You should inform your doctor or dentist that you take Reminyl before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
  • Reminyl should not be used in children as the safety and effectiveness of it in children have not been established.
  • Pregnancy and breast feeding: if you are pregnant you should not take Reminyl. If you become pregnant, consult your doctor to discuss the benefits and risks of using Reminyl while you are pregnant. It is not known if Reminyl is found in breast milk. Reminyl is not approved for use in women who may be breast feeding.

Possible Adverse Effects of Reminyl

  • Common and less serious side effects of Reminyl are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headache; loss of appetite, stomach upset, tiredness, weight loss etc. If any of these common side effects become bothersome or persistent you should consult your doctor.
  • Get immediate medical attention if you experience any of the serious side effects of Reminyl. The serious side effects of Reminyl are allergic reaction (symptoms of allergic reaction are rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody, black, or tarry stools; chest pain, decreased urination, depression, fainting; fever; seizures; persistent tiredness or weakness; severe tiredness or weakness; slow heartbeat; tremor, irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia etc.
