Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Serophene

Serophene is an ovulatory stimulant (causes stimulation of ovulation). It acts by helping to produce more hormones that cause your ovaries to release 1 or more eggs afeer menstruation.

Therapeutic Uses of Serophene

Serophene is used in treatment of female infertility. It can also be used in some other medical conditions as determined by your doctor.

Direction of use of Serophene

Take Serophene as directed by your doctor. Read the label on the medicine carefully for exact dosing instructions.

Serophene is taken orally. It can be taken with food or on empty stomach. Properly timed sexual intercourse is important for good results, as ovulation usually occurs 5 to 10 days after a dose of Serophene.

If You Miss a Dose of Serophene

If you miss a dose of Serophene, take it as soon as you can remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

How to Store Serophene

Serophene should be stored at 77 degrees F or 25 degrees C. But it can be stored for a brief period between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Serophene should be stored away from heat, moisture and light in a tightly closed container. Keep Serophene out of the reach of children.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Serophene

Do not use Serophene if you are suffering from any medical conditions listed below and consult your doctor immediately:

  • If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Serophene.
  • If you are pregnant you should not use Serophene and rule out pregnancy before using Serophene.
  • If you are suffering from any abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • If you have ovarian cysts (small growths on the ovaries) or enlargement due to polycystic ovarian syndrome.
  • If you have any liver problem, uncontrolled thyroid problem, adrenal gland problem, or a brain lesion like pituitary gland tumor.
  • If you have or ever had blockage of blood vessels due to blood clots in the legs, lungs, or other parts of the body.

Important notes about Serophene:

  • Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks that require constant attention and monitoring like operating heavy machinery, until you know how you react to Serophene, as it can cause drowsiness and lightheadedness.
  • Pregnancy with more than 1 fetus e.g. twins or triplets are possible while you are taking Serophene. Discuss the potential complications and hazards of multiple pregnancies.
  • Pregnancy and breast feeding: Do not use Serophene if you are pregnant. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor right away, before you start taking Serophene. It is not known if Serophene is found in breast milk, but do not breast feed while taking Serophene.
  • Enlargement of the ovaries may occur during treatment with Serophene or shortly after taking Serophene. Consult your doctor or other health care provider if you experience any stomach pain, pelvic pain, weight gain, stomach enlargement or discomfort while taking Serophene.
  • Use Serophene with caution in the elderly (do not use Serophene if patients post menopausal women), as they may be more sensitive to its side effects.
  • Lab tests, including pregnancy tests, should be performed before you start using Serophene. Lab tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Keep all doctor and lab appointments.

Possible Adverse Effects of Serophene

  • Common and less serious side effects of Serophene are blurring of vision or any other vision problems like spots or flashes; breast tenderness, enlarged breasts; enlargement of the ovaries; flushing; headache, dizziness; hot flashes; lightheadedness; mood change; nausea, vomiting; pelvic pain or bloating; stomach pain. Consult your doctor or other health care provider if your common and less serious side effects become bothersome or persistent.
  • Consult your doctor if you experience any serious side effects of Serophene. Serious side effects of Serophene are severe allergic reaction manifested as rash, hives, itching, difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; increased risk of cancer of the ovaries; over stimulation of the ovaries; multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets etc.), spontaneous abortion etc.
