Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Synalar
Synalar is a topical (used locally mainly on the skin) corticosteroid. It acts by reducing inflammation. It blocks all the mediators of inflammation and very effective.
Therapeutic Uses of Synalar
Synalar is used for treatment (relieving) of itching and inflammation of the skin. It can also be used for pruritic (itching) manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. It may also be used in other medical conditions as you doctor decides.
Direction of use of Synalar
Use Synalar as per direction of your doctor.
Synalar is for external use only. Apply a small quantity of Synalar to the affected area and gently rub the medicine until it is evenly distributed. Wash your hands properly (unless your hands are part of treated area) after applying Synalar. If Synalar is applied to a hairy site, the hair should be trimmed or parted to allow the medicine to be in direct contact with the skin. Do not cover (bandage or wrap) the medicine application area unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Ask your doctor or other health care provider if you have any doubt about the use of Synalar.
If You Miss a Dose of Synalar
If you miss an application of Synalar, you should apply it as soon as you can remember it. If it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed missed application and go back to your regular applicaion schedule. There is no need to apply extra Synalar.
How to Store Synalar
Synalar should be stored at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store it away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Synalar out of the reach of children. Do not store it in bathroom.

Synalar should be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed and not shared with other people. If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, check with your doctor.
Precautions to be Taken While Taking Synalar
Do not use Synalar if you are allergic to any of the ingredients used in Synalar and consult your doctor immediately.
Important notes about Synalar:
- Avoid contact of Synalar with eyes. If there is contact Synalar with eyes, wash eyes immediately with clean water.
- Pregnancy and breast-feeding: It should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while using Synalar, consult your doctor to discuss the benefits and risks of using Synalar while you are pregnant. It is not known if Synalar is secreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Synalar, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby due to Synalar.
- If Synalar was prescribed to treat the diaper area of a child, you should not use tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants.
- Synalar is a corticosteroid and before you start any new medicine, check the label of the new medication to see if it has a corticosteroid in it too. If it does or if you are not sure, check with your doctor.
- Do not use more than the recommended dose or use for longer than prescribed without consulting your doctor.
- Do not use Synalar for any other medical conditions other than the one for which it was prescribed.
- You should consult with your doctor before you receive any vaccine while you are using Synalar, especially live vaccine.
- Corticosteroids may affect growth rate in children and teenagers in some cases. If you are using it for children, they should have regular growth checks while they use Synalar.
Possible Adverse Effects of Synalar
- The common and minor side effects of Synalar are dryness and itching of skin. If any of these common side effects become persistent or bothersome to you, inform your doctor.
- Serious side effects of Synalar are severe allergic reaction (the symptoms of severe allergic reaction are rash; hives; itching; difficulty in breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); acne-like rash, excessive hair growth, inflammation of hair follicles; inflammation around the mouth; irritation, burning, redness, or swelling of skin which was not present before using Synalar; thinning, softening, or discoloration of the skin etc. If any of these serious side effects are experienced by you, get immediate medical attention.
