Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Terramycin

Terramycin is a tetracycline antibiotic and it is a broad spectrum antibiotics. It acts by interfering with the production of proteins that are needed by the bacteria to grow and as a result bacteria can not grow and multiply. Slowing the growth of bacteria, allows the defense mechanism of body to destroy them.

Therapeutic Uses of Terramycin

Terramycin is used in treatment of many bacterial infections, which are sensitive to it.

Direction of use of Terramycin

Terramycin should be used as directed by your doctor. Read the label on the medicine carefully for exact dosing instructions.

Terramycin should be taken by mouth on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meal with a glass of water and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking Terramycin.

If you are taking antacids containing aluminum, calcium, magnesium or preparations containing bismuth, iron, zinc, sodium bicarbonate etc. or calcium rich foods (eg, of food rich in calcium are milk, dairy products, calcium-enriched juices), you should not take them 2 to 3 hours before or 2 to 3 hours after taking Terramycin . Ask your doctor if you have questions about the use of Terramycin.

Terramycin should be taken for the full course of treatment, so that infection can be cleared fully. Keep taking it for the full course even if you feel better in a few days.

If You Miss a Dose of Terramycin

If you miss a dose of Terramycin, you should take it as soon as you remember it. . If it is almost time for your next dose of Terramycin, you should skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at a time.

How to Store Terramycin

Terramycin should be stored at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store it away from heat, moisture and direct light in a tightly closed light resistant (dark color) container. Do not store Terramycin in the bathroom. Keep Terramycin out of the reach of children and as well as away from pets.

Terramycin should be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed and not shared with other people. If your symptoms of infection do not improve or if they become worse, you should consult your doctor as early as possible.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Terramycin

Do not use Terramycin if you have any of the following problems and consult your doctor imeediately:

  • If you are allergic to any of the ingredients used in Terramycin or other tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline.
  • If you are taking acitretin or methoxyflurane.

Some medical conditions may interact with Terramycin. Inform your doctor or other health care provider if you have any of the following medical problems, especially any of the following:

  • If you are pregnant, planning to have a baby, or if you are breast feeding your baby.
  • If you are allergic to any medicine, food, or any other substance.
  • If you are suffering from diarrhea, a stomach infection, or any kidney problem.
  • If you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine (or commonly known as over the counter medicine), herbal preparation, or any dietary supplements.

Some medicines may interact with Terramycin. You should inform your doctor or your other health care provider if you are taking any other medicines that may interact with Terramycin, especially any of the following:

  • Acitretin or isotretinoin because side effects may occur, like increased pressure in the fluid surrounding the brain or CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) pressure.
  • Digoxin, methotrexate, methoxyflurane, oral anticoagulants like warfarin because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Terramycin.
  • Terramycin may decrease the effectiveness of atovaquone, lithium, oral contraceptives or birth control pills, penicillins (like amoxicillin) etc.

Possible Adverse Effects of Terramycin

  • All medicines may cause some side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Consult with your doctor if any of these most common side effects of Terramycin become persistent or become bothersome. The common side effects of Terramycin are nausea, indigestion, loss of appetite, diarrhea, bulky and loose stools, difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia); black hairy tongue, inflammation or redness of tongue, blurring of vision, fever, headache, hoarseness of voice, joint pain, mouth sores, rash, hives, sensitivity to sunlight, sore throat, stomach pain, swelling and itching of the rectum etc.
  • Get immediate medical attention if you experience any of the serious but uncommon side effects of Terramycin. The serious and less common side effects of Terramycin are severe allergic reaction (the symptoms of severe allergic reaction are rash; hives; itching; difficulty in taking breath; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); infection (symptoms of infection are fever, chills, sore throat etc.); itching; severe skin reaction to the sun; vaginal irritation or discharge; severe vomiting etc.
