Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Trimox
Trimox is semi synthetic penicillin. It acts by killing the bacteria sensitive to it.
Therapeutic Uses of Trimox
Trimox is used for treatment of infections caused by certain bacteria (which are sensitive to it). It is also used with other medicines to treat H. pylori infection, which causes ulcers of the small intestines. It may also be used in treatment of some other infections as determined by your doctor.
Direction of use of Trimox
Use Trimox as per direction of your doctor. Read the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions if you have any doubt about the dosing. Trimox is taken by mouth on full stomach or on empty stomach. If stomach upset occurs, take it along with food to reduce stomach irritation. To clear up your infection completely, you need to take Trimox for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.
If You Miss a Dose of Trimox
If you miss a dose of Trimox, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose of Trimox and keep taking it as regular dose. Do not take 2 doses at a time.
How to Store Trimox
Trimox should be stored (capsules and unreconstituted powder) at or below 20 degrees C (68 degrees F) and chewable tablets at room temperature 15 degrees to 30 degrees C (59 to 86 degrees F). Powder that has been mixed with water should be discarded after 14 days, if not used. Refrigeration is good but not required for powder mixed with water. Do not store it in bathroom. Keep Trimox out of reach of children.

If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, consult your doctor. It should be taken by the patient for whom it is prescribed and not shared with others. It should not be used in treating other infections without asking your doctor. If you have any questions about Trimox, ask doctor, pharmacist, or other health care provider.
Precautions to be Taken While Taking Trimox
Do not use Trimox if you have any of the medical problems listed below and consult your doctor immediately:
- If you are allergic to any of the ingredients used in Trimox or other penicillin antibiotics like ampicillin.
- If you have recently received or will be receiving live oral typhoid vaccine.
Some medical conditions may interact with Trimox. You should inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions that may interact with Trimox, especially if any of the following:
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.
- If you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine (over the counter), herbal preparation, or any dietary supplements.
- If you have allergy to any other medicine, food, or any other substance.
- If you have a history of allergies, asthma, hay fever etc.
- If you are suffering from kidney problems, gonorrhea, or infectious mononucleosis.
- If you have had a severe allergic reaction (symptoms of allergic reaction are severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, dizziness) to a cephalosporin like cephalexin or other beta-lactam antibiotic (penicillin is beta-lactum antibiotic) like imipenem.
Some medicines may interact with Trimox. If you are taking any medicine that may interact with Trimox, you should inform your doctor, especially any of the following medicines:
- Oral anticoagulants like warfarin because the risk of bleeding may be increased.
- Probenecid because it may increase the amount of Trimox in your blood and sometimes they are combined to have more effect with less amount of Trimox.
- Methotrexate because the risk of side effects of Trimox may be increased.
- Live oral typhoid vaccine or hormonal birth control pills because their effectiveness may be decreased by Trimox.
- Chloramphenicol, macrolide antibiotics like erythromycin, sulfonamides like sulfamethoxazole, or tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline because they may decrease the effectiveness of Trimox.
Possible Adverse Effects of Trimox
- Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting are common and minor side effects of Trimox. If any of these common and mild side effects become bothersome and persistent, you should consult your doctor.
- Seek medical attention right away if any of the serious side effects of Trimox occurs. The serious and less common side effects of Trimox are severe allergic reaction (the manifestations of serious allergic reaction are rash, itching, difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blood in stool, dark urine, confusion; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat (signs of infection); red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe diarrhea; stomach pain or cramps; unusual bruising or bleeding; vaginal discharge, vaginal irritation; yellowing of the skin or eyes etc.
