Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Unisom
Unisom is a first generation antihistamine. It antagonizes the natural chemical histamine in the body and helps in relieving symptoms that histamine produce like sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. By crossing blood brain barrier (BBB) it produce sedation and used in insomnia to produce sleep.
Therapeutic Uses of Unisom
Unisom as a single drug (not part of a combination) is used as a short-term treatment for insomnia (difficulty in sleeping). It can also be used in treatment of allergy as your doctor determines.
Direction of use of Unisom
Take this medicine with food or milk, which will prevent stomach upset. Take it one hour or two hors before going to sleep. It is best to take Unisom only when you can devote several hours to sleep.
If You Miss a Dose of Unisom
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you take Unisom before sleeping and miss a dose of it and you remember it the next morning, you should skip the missed dose of Unisom and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
How to Store Unisom
Unisom should be stored at room temperature away from moisture, light and heat. Do not store it in your bathroom. Keep it out of reach of children.

Cold or allergy medicines, narcotic pain medicines, other sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety can add to sleepiness caused by Unisom. Inform your doctor if you are using any of these medicines while you are taking Unisom or if you need to use them. If you are unable to sleep after taking Unisom, consult your doctor.
Precautions to be Taken While Taking Unisom
Do not use Unisom if you have allergy to any of the ingredients used in Unisom. You should inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, kidney disease, an enlarged prostate, problems with urination, a stomach ulcer or obstruction, or a chronic lung disease such as bronchitis, emphysema etc. before you start taking Unisom.
Possible Adverse Effects of Unisom
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction (symptoms of allergic reaction are skin rash, hives, and difficulty in breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat). Consult your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects, vomiting, severe headache etc.
