Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Urispas
Urispas is an anti-cholinergic medicine. It acts by decreasing muscle spasms of the urinary bladder. Urispas relieves pain, frequency, and urgency of urination and also nighttime urination associated with certain medical conditions.
Therapeutic Uses of Urispas
Urispas is used for treatment of pain, frequency, and urgency of urination. It is also used for treatment of nighttime urination associated with certain medical conditions. It can also be used in combination with other medicines to treat ulcers. It can also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Direction of use of Urispas
Use Urispas as per direction of your doctor. You should read the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions. Swallow Urispas as whole without breaking, crushing, chewing, or opening the capsules before swallowing. Ask your doctor or other health care provider if you have any question about use of Urispas.
If You Miss a Dose of Urispas
If you miss a dose of Urispas, you should take it as early as possible or as soon as you can remember it. If it is near the time of the next dose of Urispas, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses to catch the missed dose.
How to Store Urispas
Urispas should be stored at at the room temperature of 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Store it away from heat, moisture and light in a tightly closed light resistant container. Keep it out of reach of children and do not store it in your bathroom.

Urispas should be used by the patient for whom it is prescribed. Do not share Urispas with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests like prostate examination, prostate-specific-antigen or PSA, kidney tests etc. should be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Precautions to be Taken While Taking Urispas
Do not take Urispas if you are having any of the following medical problems and consult your doctor immediately:
- If you are allergic to any of the ingredients used in Urispas.
- If you are taking another alpha-blocker like prazosin for any medical problem.
Some medical conditions may interact with Urispas. If you have any medical that may interact with Urispas, inform your doctor before taking Urispas, especially any of the following medical conditions:
- If you are pregnant, planning to have a baby, or if you are breast feeding.
- If you have allergy to any medicine (other than Urispas) or any other substance.
- If you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine (over the counter medicines), herbal preparation, or any dietary supplement for any purpose.
- If you have a history of high blood pressure (hypertension) or prostate cancer.
- If you will undergo some eye surgery soon.
- If you have had a severe allergic reaction which is manifested by severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness etc. to any sulfonamide (sulfa) medicine, such as acetazolamide, celecoxib, certain diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide, sulfonylureas (glyburide used in treatment of diabetes), probenecid, sulfamethoxazole, valdecoxib, zonisamide etc.
Some medicines may interact with Urispas. If you are taking any medicine which may interact with Urispas (if you have doubt about the medicines which may interact with Urispas you should ask your doctor), inform your doctor especially any of the following medicines:
- Alpha-blockers like prazosin, terazosin or phosphodiesterase inhibitors like sildenafil (viagra) because symptoms of low blood pressure severe dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting etc. may occur.
- Warfarin, an oral anticoagulant medicine, because the risk of side effects may be increased by Urispas.
- Azole antifungals (e.g. ketoconazole), cimetidine, or SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) like fluoxetine because they may increase the risk of side effects of Urispas.
Possible Adverse Effects of Urispas
- Urispas can have some side effects like any other medicine. Some are minor and common and some are serious and uncommon. Common and mild side effects of Urispas are diarrhea, lightheadedness, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, cough, back pain, blurring of vision, decreased sexual ability, runny or stuffy nose, sinus inflammation, trouble sleeping, weakness etc. If any of the common side effects of Urispas become troublesome or persistent you should consult your doctor.
- Seek medical attention right away if any of the serious side effects of Urispas occurs. The serious side effects of Urispas are severe allergic reaction (the symptoms of severe allergic reaction are rash, hives, itching, difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain, fainting; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat (symptoms of infection); irregular heartbeat; prolonged, painful erection, severe of persistent dizziness etc.
