Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Zyvox
Zyvox is an oxazolidinone group of antibiotic. It acts by interfering with the bacterial protein synthesis and without protein bacteria can not grow and multiply.
Therapeutic Uses of Zyvox
Zyvox is used for treatment of certain serious bacterial infections that are often resistant to other commonly used antibiotics. It is used for treating infection caused by bacteria sensitive to it.
Direction of use of Zyvox
Zyvox should be used as directed by your doctor. Read the label on the medicine carefully for exact dosing instructions. Take Zyvox by mouth along with food or on empty stomach. If you experience stomach upset you should take it with food to reduce stomach upset. To clear up your infection completely, Zyvox should be used for the full course of treatment. Keep using it even if you feel better in a few days.
If You Miss a Dose of Zyvox
If you miss a dose of Zyvox, you should take it as soon as you can remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose (because you missed for long time), skip the missed dose of Zyvox and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at a time for missing a dose.
How to Store Zyvox
Zyvox should be stored at controlled room temperature (77 degree F or 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) can be done. Store it away from heat, moisture and light in a tightly closed light resistant container. Do not store it in bathroom. Keep Zyrtec out of reach of children and pets.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Zyvox
Do not use Zyvox if you have any of the following medical problems and consult your doctor immediately:
- If you are allergic to any of the ingredients used in Zyvox.
- If you have taken a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor like atomoxetine, a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor like duloxetine; apraclonidine, bupropion, or certain anorexiants like sibutramine within the past 2 weeks.
- If you are taking an amphetamine (eg, dextroamphetamine), certain anorexiants (eg, phentermine), a catechol-O-methyltransferase or COMT inhibitor (eg, entacapone), levodopa, meperidine, or a sympathomimetic (eg, albuterol, dopamine, epinephrine, pseudoephedrine etc.).
Some medical conditions may interact with Zyvox. Inform your doctor or other health care provider if you have any medical condition that may interact with Zyvox, especially any of the following:
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
- If you are taking any prescription medicine or over the counter medicine (nonprescription medicine), herbal preparation, or dietary supplements.
- If you have allergies to any other medicine, food, or any other substance.
- If you are taking any anti-depressant (medicine for depression).
- If you have a prolonged infection that has been previously treated with another antibiotic.
- If you have a history of high blood pressure, any kidney problem, bone marrow problem, low blood cell or platelet counts, an adrenal gland tumor like pheochromocytoma; carcinoid syndrome, severe liver problem, seizures, or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).
Some medicines may interact with Zyvox. Inform your doctor or other health care provider if you taking any medicine that may interact with Zyvox, especially any of the following:
- Apraclonidine, meperidine, or tryptophan because the risk of serious side effects or toxic effects of these medicines may be increased by Zyvox.
- Amphetamines like dextroamphetamine, anorexiants like phentermine, sibutramine; or sympathomimetics like dopamine, epinephrine, pseudoephedrine etc. because the risk of serious side effects, including severe headache, fever, or high blood pressure, may be increased.
- Bupropion, COMT inhibitors (entacapone), levodopa, norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (atomoxetine), serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (duloxetine), or SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) like fluoxetine, because the risk of serious side effects, including severe fever, mental or mood changes, or muscle problems, may be increased.
Possible Adverse Effects of Zyvox
- All medicines may cause some side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Inform or consult your doctor if you experience any of the common and mild side effects of Zyvox and any of them become troublesome or persistent. The common and mild side effects of Zyvox are constipation, nausea, vomiting, headache, bad taste in mouth, diarrhea, dizziness, tongue discoloration, trouble sleeping (insomnia) etc.
- Get immediate medical attention if you experience any of the serious side effects of Zyvox. The serious and uncommon side effects of Zyvox are severe allergic reaction (the symptoms of serious allergic reaction are skin rash, hives, itching, difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); agitation, excitation, loss of coordination, seizures; blood in stool, blood in the vomit, , fast heartbeat (palpitation), muscle spasms, prolonged and/or repeated nausea or vomiting, severe diarrhea, prolonged diarrhea; chills, sore throat or fever (signs of infection); stomach pain, stomach cramps; sweating; swelling of the hands or feet and tingling or numbness of hands or feet; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual tiredness or weakness; vaginal irritation or unusual discharge; vision changes; white patches in the mouth etc.
