Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Flomax
Flomax is an alpha-blocker medicine. It acts by relaxing muscles in the prostate gland and urinary bladder, which helps to improve urine flow and reduce symptoms of BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia).
Therapeutic Uses of Flomax
Flomax is used for treatment (symptomatic relief of BPH) of enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It may also be used for other medical conditions as determined by your doctor.
Direction of use of Flomax
Flomax should be used as per direction of your doctor. Read the label on the medicine carefully for exact dosing instructions. An extra patient information leaflet is also available with Flomax. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
- Take Flomax by mouth 30 minutes after having the same meal each day (lunch or dinner).
- Swallow Flomax capsules as whole without breaking, crushing, chewing, or opening the capsules.
- If you miss a dose of Flomax you should take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. If you miss more than 2 dose of Flomax, contact your doctor for instructions.
If You Miss a Dose of Flomax
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose of Flomax, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose for missing a dose of Flomax.
How to Store Flomax
Flomax should be stored room temperature of 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light, heat and moisture. Brief storage between 59-86 degrees (15-30 degrees C) can be done. Do not store it in your bathroom. Keep Flomax out of reach of children.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Flomax
Do not use Flomax if you have any of the following medical conditions and consult your doctor:
- If you are allergic to any of the ingredients used in Flomax.
- If you are taking another alpha-blocker like prazosin.
Some medical conditions may interact with Flomax. Consult your doctor or other health care provider if you have any medical condition that may interact with Flomax, especially any of the following:
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or if you are breast feeding your baby.
- If you are taking any prescription medicine, over the counter medicine or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, any dietary supplement etc.
- If you have allergies to other medicines, food, or any other substance.
- If you have a history of high blood pressure or prostate cancer.
- If you will have to undergo any eye surgery.
- If you have had a severe allergic reaction (the symptoms of severe allergic reaction are severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness) to any sulfonamide (sulfa) medicine, such as acetazolamide, celecoxib, certain diuretics (eg, hydrochlorothiazide), sulfonylureas (eg, glyburide), probenecid, sulfamethoxazole, valdecoxib, or zonisamide.
Some medicines may interact with Flomax. You should inform your doctor or other health care provider like pharmacist if you are taking any medicine that may interact with Flomax, especially any of the following:
- Alpha-blockers (like prazosin) or phosphodiesterase inhibitors (sildenafil or commonly known as Viagra) because symptoms of low blood pressure (like severe dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting) may occur.
- Azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), cimetidine, SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (like fluoxetine) because they may increase the risk of side effects of Flomax.
- Warfarin (anticoagulant) because the risk of side effects may be increased.
Possible Adverse Effects of Flomax
- Back pain, diarrhea, cough, weakness, blurring of vision; decreased sexual ability, dizziness, drowsiness; lightheadedness; runny or stuffy nose; sinus inflammation, trouble sleeping etc. are the common and mild side effects of Flomax. If any of these common and minor side effects of Flomax become troublesome or persistent, you should consult your doctor.
- Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the severe side effects of Flomax, but they are uncommon. The severe side effects of Flomax are severe allergic reaction (the symptoms of severe allergic reaction are skin rash, hives, itching, difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue etc.); chest pain, fainting; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat (signs of infection); irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia); prolonged, painful erection; severe of persistent dizziness etc.
