Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Denavir

Denavir includes pencilovir that is antiviral agent being quite effective against herpes viruses. This compound applied against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. According to the studies in vitro due to the activity of the compound in infected cell the synthesis and replication of the herpes viral DNA are inhibited selectively.

Therapeutic Uses of Denavir

Denavir is applied to treat the outbreaks of the herpes simplex virus on lips and face skin. It doesn’t cure the infection however it treats the outbreaks, eliminates the pain and assists the cold sores healing. It is intended for use in adults and children over 12 years of the age.

Direction of use of Denavir

• Apply the Denavir cream with clean hands onto clean and dry face.
• Rub the cream into the cold sores area thoroughly and wash your hands after the usage of the cream.
• The cream should applied on the face every two hours of vigil for the period of 4 days or according to your doctor prescriptions.
• It is recommended to start using the cream even before the outbreaks appears i.e. at the stage when only signs of the cold sores occur.

Dose of Denavir, if Missed

In case you have missed to take the medication take it as soon as it possible. However in case it is already the time to use your next dosage of Denavir then you should skip the dosage missed and follow your common schedule of the cream usage. Avoid using two dosages at once.

How to Store Denavir

The medication should be kept at the temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C). Make sure you have closed the cap of tube properly after the usage. Store the medication beyond of the reach of children and pets.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Denavir

Do not use the medication and contact your doctor at first in case:

• You experience any allergies, cancer, HIV infection as well as general immunity problems.
• You are within pregnancy period or planning to become pregnant.
• You are at the breast-feeding period. It is still not clear whether the cream may appear in the breast milk and thus affect the baby.

Avoid application of the medication onto the mucous membranes and eyes as it may cause irritation.

Important notes to consider:

• The denavir cream is contraindicated to those patients experiencing hypersensitivity to any medication component.
• Up to now there are no overdose reports. However it may be explained by the fact that the penciclovir is badly absorbed in oral use.
• Consult your healthcare provider about starting denavir treatment in case you already use any other medications. The matter is denavir may interact with the medication you take.

Possible Adverse Effects

The use of the denavir cream may cause such common side effects as:

• Headache, irritation at the part of the skin covered with cream, change taste abilities. Contact your doctor in case you experience any of these side effects for a prolonged period of time.
• Rash, swelling, itching, dizziness, difficulties when breathing as well as other allergic reactions. Contact your health care provider in case you have any of the above mentioned side effects.
