Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Adalat

Adalat belongs to Calcium channel blocker group of anti hypertensive medicine. Adalat acts by interfering normal action of calcium in blood vessels that causes constriction of blood vessels and thereby cause dilation of blood vessels and reduce blood pressure. It also act on heart thereby reduce the force of contraction of heart (less blood is pump) and reduce heart beat also.

Therapeutic Uses of adalat

Adalat is an anti hypertensive medicine used for reducing high blood pressure. It is also used in treatment of angina.

Direction of use of Adalat

Adalat is taken orally once a day. Swallow Adalat as a whole, do not crush, break or chew it. It is taken on full stomach to reduce stomach upset and also reduce chances of bleeding in stomach and stomach ulcer. If you have any questions regarding dosing of Adalat consult your doctor or health care provider.

Dose of Adalat, if Missed

If you miss a dose of Adalat take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose than skip the missed dose and continue as regular schedule. Consult your doctor if you miss dose two successive times and do not take 2 doses of Adalat together.

How to Store Adalat

Adalat is stored at room temperature i.e. 59-86 degree Fahrenheit or 15-30 degree C in tightly closed container. Keep Adalat away from moisture, heat, light and children.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Adalat

Do not use Adalat if you are allergic to any of the ingredients of it and consult your doctor if you are allergic to it. Important notes:

  • Do not drive or do risky works till you know how you react to Adalat.
  • Adalat should be used in elderly with caution as they may be more sensitive to it.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast feeding, consult your doctor. You should discuss risks and benefits of using Adalat if you have any of the above. It is not sure if Adalat is secreted in human milk, but you should discuss about the risks to your baby.
  • While taking Adalat you should maintain good dental hygiene. Brush and floss your teeth regularly and also visit your dentist regularly as recommended by your dentist.

Possible Adverse Effects of Adalat

  • The common side effects of Adalat are nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, giddiness, flushing, light headedness, generalized weakness, heartburn etc. These can become bothersome if present for long time.
  • You should consult your doctor or health care provider immediately if you have any of the uncommon serious adverse effects like irregular pulse, shortness of breath, painful bleeding and swollen gums or allergic reaction (difficulty in breathing, tightness in chest, skin rash, hives, itching, palpitation, anxisty, swelling in lips, face, tongue, mouth etc.).
