Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Benicar
Benicar is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II (a chemical transmitter that causes constriction of blood vessels) and thereby causing dilatation of blood vessels and thus allowing kidneys to remove extra salt (sodium) and water. All the above actions cause lowering of blood pressure.
Therapeutic Uses of Benicar
Benicar is used in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) alone or along with other anti hypertensive medicines. It can also be used in other conditions as your doctor thinks necessary.
Direction of use of Benicar
Benicar should be taken as directed by your doctor. Usually it is taken orally with full stomach or on empty stomach. If you have any question about how to use Benicar, ask your doctor or other health care provider.
Dose of Benicar, if Missed
If you miss a dose of Benicar take it as soon as possible. Do not take 2 doses of Benicar if you miss 1 dose. You should skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose.
How to Store Benicar
Benicar is stored at room temperature i.e. in between 68 to 77 degree F or 20-25 degree C. Keep it in a place where children can not reach. It should be stored in a tightly closed container away from direct sunlight, heat or moisture.

Benicar should be used by the patient only, for whom it is prescribed and never shared with anyone else. If you have any doubt about Benicar consult your doctor. You should consult if there is no improvement of your condition or there is deterioration in symptoms.
Precautions to be Taken While Taking Benicar
Benicar should not be used in the following conditions and doctor should be consulted immediately if you have any of the conditions:
- If you are allergic to Benicar or any of the ingredients of it.
- If you are pregnant (especially in the second or third trimester of pregnancy) or you are breast feeding.
Important notes to consider:
- Pregnancy and lactation: Benicar can cause fetal malformation and fetal or newborn death if you take it during pregnancy. If you think you are pregnant than do not take Benicar or if you suspect pregnancy during taking it than consult your doctor immediately. Benicar is found in breast milk so it should not be used during breast feeding.
- Benicar can cause dizziness and you should not drive, operate machinery or do difficult works until you know if you get dizziness or drowsiness due to Benicar. The sedative and dizziness effects of Benicar are increased if you take alcohol while you are on Benicar.
- Benicar should not be given to children as the safety and effectiveness of it is not established in children.
- Inform your doctor or dentist if you taking Benicar before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, surgery etc.
- Consult your doctor before using substitute for sodium salt with potassium salt or any product that has potassium in it.
- Blood pressure medications can cause generalized weakness in first few weeks in the beginning of treatment. But do not stop taking Benicar even if you feel tired and consult your doctor if it continues for longer duration or any new symptoms develops.
Possible Adverse Effects
- Common side effects of Benicar areunusual tiredness, headache, dizziness, stomach pain or abdominal pain, diarrhea, cough etc. Consult your doctor if you have any of the common side effects of Benicar.
- Get medical attention if you have any of the uncommon but potentially serious side effects like fainting, high pulse rate or palpitation, light headedness or allergic reaction characterized by swelling of lips, mouth, face, tongue, tightness in chest or breathing difficulty.
