Calan

Verapamil

Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Calan

Calan is a calcium channel blocker group of antihypertensive (used in the treatment of high blood pressure) medicine. Calan blocks entry of the calcium ions in to the muscle cells of the arteries including coronary arteries that supply the heart. Calcium ion is what triggers the contraction of the muscle cells of the blood vessels and if the entry of calcium ion is blocked the muscle cells can not contract and it will cause relaxation of the blood vessels. The relaxation of the blood vessels allows more blood into the arteries and thus Calan is useful in the treatment of angina chest pain that result from reduced (less than required) blood supply to the coronary arteries. Calan relaxes arteries of the rest of the body also thereby reduce blood pressure (heart has to pump against this blood pressure, the higher the blood pressure the higher is the workload of the heart) and if blood pressure is reduced than heart has to work less and will require less oxygen for that. Calan also reduces heart rate by slowing the conduction of electrical impulses to the heart.

Therapeutic Uses of Calan

Calan is used in the treatment of angina, high blood pressure, irregular heart beat etc. Calan is very good in reducing angina pain by increasing blood supply to the heart by causing relaxation and preventing spasm of blood vessels.

Direction of use of Calan

Calan is taken orally (swallowed) with a glass of water (if your doctor advice you otherwise follow that advice). Calan must be taken as per direction to prevent the angina pain. It may not be effective if taken only during attack f angina. Do not stop Calan without consulting your doctor, because if you stop Calan abruptly it may increase the angina pain. If you have to stop Calan, stop it gradually.
