Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Cialis
Cialis is a medicine that belongs to a group called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. It acts by directing blood flow to the penis and maintaining an erection for longer time during sexual stimulation. Sexual stimulation is must for the blood flow to the penis.
Therapeutic Uses of Cialis
The main use of Cialis is in treatment of erectile dysfunction in men like impotence (where erection of penis is absent or can not be maintained for enough time). It can also be used in other conditions as your doctor thinks necessary. Some important notes on Cialis:
- It should be taken 30 minutes to 12 hours before sex.
- Cialis works for approximately 36 hours.
- Cialis has less side effects and lasts longer in the body and increase spontaneity in compare to Viagra and Levitra, so two third of clients prefer Cialis to Viagra.
Direction of use of Cialis
Cialis should be taken as per direction of your doctor. You can also check the label of medicine for the dosing of the medicine. An extra leaflet is also available with the medicine for patient information. If you have any doubt regarding use of Cialis consult your doctor or other health care provider.
If you are using Cialis regularly, than take it at the same time everyday for better result. If you are using it when required, than you should take it at least 30 minutes before sexual act, as per direction of your doctor. Ask your doctor if you can take grape fruit or grapefruit juice while taking Cialis.
Dose of Cialis, if Missed
If you miss a dose of Cialis (if you are using it as needed) take it at least 30 minutes before sexual intercourse. Take it as regular dose and skip the missed dose, if you miss for long time and it is almost time for the next dose. Do not take 2 doses of Cialis at a time.
How to Store Cialis
Cialis should be stored at temperature between 59 to 86 degree Fahrenheit or 15 to 30 degree Centigrade. It should be stored away from light, moisture and heat. Keep Cialis out of reach of children.

Sexual stimulation is must for Cialis to cause an erection of penis. You can not get erection just by taking Cialis, without sexual stimulation. There should be a gap of at least 30 minutes between taking of Cialis and sexual act, so that the medicine gets enough time to act.
Precautions to be Taken While Taking Cialis
Do not take Cialis if you are using any nitrate medicine for treatment of angina, chest pain, or other heart problems. These medicines are nitroglycerin (Minitran, Nitrolingual, Nitrostat, Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid etc.), isosorbide mononitrate (Monoket, ISMO), isosorbide dinitrate (Sorbitrate, Isordil, Dilatrate-SR etc.) and amyl nitrate etc. If you take Cialis with nitrate it can cause serious lowering of blood pressure that can lead to shock, heart failure etc.
Consult your doctor before taking Cialis if you have any of the following medical problems:
- A recent heart attack in last 3 months, stroke in recent time or a history of congestive heart failure.
- Any heart disease like rhythm disturbance.
- If you are suffering from angina.
- If you have blood pressure problem; either low blood pressure or high blood pressure.
- If you have liver disease or kidney disease.
- If you have peptic ulcer.
- If you have bleeding disorder like hemophilia or blood cell diseases like sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia (blood cancer).
- If you have an inherited condition of the eye known as retinitis pigmentosa (pigment deposition in the retina of eyes).
- If you have physical deformity of penis like epispasdia or hypospasdia or Peyronie's disease.
- If you have been advised by your doctor not to have sex for medical reason.
Possible Adverse Effects
The common side effects of Cialis are headache, backache, muscle pain, runny nose, indigestion, flushing or stuffy nose etc. These side effects usually disappear after few hours after appearing. Patients who get back pain and muscle pain usually get it 12 to 24 hours after taking Cialis and these back pain and muscle aches usually go away by themselves within 48 hours.
