Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Deltasone

Deltasone or Prednisone is a corticosteroid medicine. It acts by decreasing the tissue response to inflammatory conditions. It acts against all type of inflammatory mediators. It also causes change to the body’s response to certain immune stimulus.

Therapeutic Uses of Deltasone

Deltasone is used in the treatment of severe allergic reactions, bronchial asthma, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, serious life threatening conditions and some skin diseases. It can also be used in other medical conditions as determined by your doctor.

Direction of use of Deltasone

Deltasone should be taken as per direction of your doctor. Read the label on the medicine carefully for the dosing instruction and follow them. Deltasone is taken orally along with some food. Follow the instructions given in the label of the medicine unless your doctor specifically tells you. Deltasone should be taken regularly without missing a dose of it.

Dose of Deltasone, if Missed

If you miss a dose of Deltasone or prednisone, take it as soon as you remember it. If you miss for prolong period and it is near the for the next dose than skip the missed dose and follow the regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses of Deltasone to compensate for the missed dose.

How to Store Deltasone

Deltasone is stored at room temperature of 68 degree Fahrenheit to 77 degree F. it should be stored in a dry place away from heat, moisture and light to avoid degradation of the medicine. Keep Deltasone out of reach of children.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Deltasone

Do not use Deltasone if you are having any of the conditions listed below and consult your doctor or other health care provider right away:

  • If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Deltasone or allergic to some medicines like sulfonamides or you have some food allergy.
  • If you are taking mifepristone.
  • If you have fungal infection (systemic).

Some medical conditions can react or interact with Deltasone and you should inform your doctor if you are suffering from any of the following medical conditions:

  • If you have allergy to some medicines, food or some other substance.
  • If you are suffering from bacterial (tuberculosis or any other bacterial infection), viral (measles, chickenpox) or fungal (systemic fungal infection like systemic candidiasis) infection.
  • If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breast feeding.
  • If at present you are taking some prescription or non prescription medicine, dietary supplementation or any herbal medicine.
  • If you have heart problem, liver problem, kidney problem, diabetes mellitus (type I and II) or hypothyroidism.
  • If you are suffering from peptic ulcer, gastritis, esophagitis, stomach ulcer or perforation, ulcerative colitis etc.
  • If you had psychiatric problem like depression.
  • If you are about to get vaccination with live virus (smallpox, chickenpox, etc.) or live bacteria (BGC for tuberculosis).

Some medicines can interact with Deltasone, inform your doctor or other health care provider if you are taking any medicines listed below:

  • Aspirin or oral anticoagulants like warfarin, because the action of these medicines may be decreased and side effects increased.
  • Methotraxate because the side of this anticancer and anti rheumatoid arthritis medicine may be increased.
  • Effectiveness of Deltasone may be less if you take medicines like barbiturates (phenobarbital), anti epilepsy medicines (carbamazepine, hydantoins), anti tuberculosis drugs (rifampin) etc.
  • Azole anti fungals (fluconazole, ketoconazole), steroidal contraceptives (desogestrel) can cause side effects like weakness, muscle pain, joint pain, low blood sugar if taken with Deltasone.

Possible Adverse Effects

Like other medicines Deltasone can cause side effects and some people get no side effects, some get minor side effects and some get severe side effects. The following are most common side effects and you should consult your doctor if these common side effects become bothersome to you:

  • Insomnia, headache, nervousness, mood changes, increased sweating, increased appetite, indigestion etc.

Get immediate medical attention if you get any of the serious side effects with Deltasone that are listed below:

  • Serious allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, breathing difficulty, discomfort in the chest, swelling of lips, face, mouth, ), headache, fever, cold, sore throat, severe vomiting, dizziness, depression, mood change, personality change, convulsion, diarrhea, black tarry stools, blood stained vomit, weight loss or weight gain joint pain, muscle pain, generalized weakness, increased pressure of the eyes, menstrual changes etc.
