Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Detrol

Detrol is an antimuscarinic medicine. It acts by blocking the chemicals that causes the contraction of urinary bladder which causes emptying of the bladder.

Therapeutic Uses of Detrol

Detrol is used in the treatment of urinary incontinence, urinary urgency and urinary frequency. It also can be used in certain conditions that your doctor determines to use.

Direction of use of Detrol

Detrol is taken as directed by your doctor and if you have any question about the use of Detrol consult your doctor or other health care provider. The following things should be kept in mind while taking Detrol:

  • Detrol should be taken orally along with food or without food. It can be taken with water or with any other non alcoholic drinks like fruit juice, soda etc.
  • Detrol tablet should be swallowed as a whole with out breaking, crushing or chewing it.
  • Keep taking Detrol even if you feel better after taking for few days. Do not miss a dose of it and ideally it should be taken at the same time daily, because it gives the best result and also it is easier to remember.

Dose of Detrol, if Missed

If you miss a dose of Detrol take it as soon as you remember it. If it is time for the next dose than skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing as usual. Never take double dose at a time.

How to Store Detrol

Detrol is stored at about 77 degree Fahrenheit or 25 degree C. Storing of Detrol between 15 to 30 degree C for a brief period is acceptable with out any problem. Do not store it in the bathroom where the moisture is high. It should be stored in a dry place away from heat, moisture and light. Keep it out of reach of children of your house.

If you are not getting any result after taking this medicine for some time than consult your doctor. Do not share Detrol with anyone. It should be used by the patient only for whom it is prescribed.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Detrol

Do not use Detrol if you have any of the following conditions and consult your doctor or other health care provider:

  • If you are allergic to Tolterodine or any other ingredients of Detrol.
  • If you are suffering from sever narrow angle glaucoma, urinary retention, gastric retention etc.

Notes worth remembering:

  • Do not take Detrol if you are pregnant or if you think you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking Detrol, than consult your doctor about the risks and benefits of Detrol during pregnancy. Do not breast feed if you are taking Detrol, because it is not clear if it is secreted in the breast milk.
  • Use Detrol with extra caution if you have to use it in children. The safety and effectiveness of Detrol is not yet established.
  • Till you know how you react to Detrol you should not drive or operate heavy machinery or do other jobs that are risky and need constant monitoring or attention.

Possible Adverse Effects

  • Consult your doctor if you have any of the most common side effects with Detrol like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, stomach pain, joint pain, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, dryness of mouth, drying of tears, vertigo, flu like symptoms, URTI (upper respiratory tract infection) and they become bothersome.
  • Get immediate medical attention if you have any of the following serious side effects with Detrol like severe allergic reaction that is manifested by swelling of lips, face, mouth, tongue, skin rash, itching etc.; high pulse rate, palpitation or pounding pulse, dizziness that is severe, hallucination, chest pain, swelling of hands and legs, problems in urination etc.
