Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Elimite
Elimite kills the mites that are the causative agents of skin disease scabies (caused by mite Sarcoptes scabiei).
Therapeutic Uses of Elimite
Elimite is used in the treatment of scabies.
Direction of use of Elimite
Elimite is for external use only. Use Elimite as your doctor tells you to use. If you have any doubt about the direction of use of Elimite, consult your doctor or other health care provider.
Elimite should be thoroughly massaged from head to soles of the feet. You should not apply Elimite on the face. It is also not necessary to apply it in the scalp except in children. Clean the application of Elimite by washing or bathing after 12 to 14 hours. There may be itching after applying Elimite, but you should not worry because it is not due to treatment failure and is usually due to some irritation of Elimite. If living mites are not completely eradicated than you have to reuse Elimite after 2 weeks.
Dose of Elimite, if Missed
Since it is usually a single application so the missing of application not a problem. If you forget to use Elimite for re-treatment after 14 days, than use it as soon as you remember it.
How to Store Elimite
Elimite is stored between 59 and 77 degree F. It should be stored in a cool dry place away from heat, moisture and light. Keep Elimite away from children and out of reach for them.
More Information About Elimite
Those who are not suffering from scabies should not use Elimite, it should only be used by the patient for whom it is prescribed.
Precautions to be Taken While Taking Elimite
Do not use Elimite if you are allergic to it or any of the ingredients used in making it. You should consult your doctor or other health care provider immediately if you are allergic to it.
Important notes:
- Elimite is only for external application. Do not apply it on mucous membrane, on ulcers, or if there is any injury or laceration. Do not apply Elimite near the eyes and do not allow it to come in contact with mouth, nasal mucosa etc. as it may cause irritation. If it comes in contact with your eyes than flush it with clean water immediately.
- Pregnancy and breast feeding: if you are pregnant you should consult your doctor before using Elimite cream. You should discuss the risks of using it during pregnancy. It is not clear if Elimite is present in breast milk after skin application, but you should not breast feed your baby after using Elimite.
- Do not use Elimite in infants below 2 months of age as it is not safe in infants below this age.
Possible Adverse Effects
- Consult your doctor if common side effects like itching, swelling of skin, redness of skin, burning or stinging etc. persists for long duration or they become bothersome after applying Elimite.
- Seel medical attention immediately if you get allergic reaction due to application of Elimite. The symptoms of allergic reactions are severe itching, skin rash, difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of lips, mouth, tongue, face etc.
