Griseofulvin

Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Grifulvin

Grifulvin V is an anti fungal medicine. It acts by killing the sensitive fungi.

Therapeutic Uses of Grifulvin

Grifulvin V is used in the treatment of fungal infection of scalp, nail, foot (athlete's foot), hair follicle (barber's itch), thigh and body.

Direction of use of Grifulvin

Grifulvin V should be taken as per direction of your doctor. Grifulvin V is taken orally with food or without food. To clear up the fungal infection completely, Grifulvin V should be taken for the full course. If you feel the improvement in symptoms also keep taking it till you finish the course.

If You Miss a Dose of Grifulvin

If you miss a dose of Grifulvin V take it as soon as you remember it. If it is time for the next dose, than skip the missed dose and continue taking Grifulvin V as scheduled. Do not take 2 doses of Grifulvin V at a time.

How to Store Grifulvin

Grifulvin V should be stored at room temperature. Store it away from moisture, heat and light. Keep it out of reach of children.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Grifulvin

Do not take Grifulvin V if you have any of the following conditions and inform your doctor urgently:

  • If you have allergy to any of the ingredients of Grifulvin V.
  • If you are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • If you are suffering from liver disease like cirrhosis of liver, or blood disease like porphyria.

Some medical conditions may interact with Grifulvin V. inform if you have any medical condition that may interact with Grifulvin V. The list of medical conditions that may interact with Grifulvin V are listed below:

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • If you are suffering from diabetes mellitus, liver disease, lupus etc.
  • If you have allergy to any food, medicine or any other substance.
  • If you are taking any medicine either prescription or non prescription medicine, food supplement or any herbal medication.

Some medicines may interact with Grifulvin V. Inform your doctor or other health care provider if you are taking any medicine that may interact with Grifulvin V. the list of medicines that can interact with Grifulvin V are given below:

  • Barbiturates like Phenobarbital, because this may reduce the effectiveness of Grifulvin V.
  • Anticoagulants like warfarin, cyclosporine, or oral contraceptives pills, because Grifulvin V may reduce effectiveness of these medications.

Possible Adverse Effects Grifulvin

  • Grifulvin V may cause some side effects, like any other medicine. Some of the side effects are common and minor and some are serious side effects. Consult your doctor if common side effects become bothersome or last for long period. Commonest side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, insomnia, dizziness, stomach upset etc.
  • Serious but uncommon side effects are confusion; numbness of tingling of the hands or feet; white patches in the mouth, allergic reaction etc. The clinical manifestations of allergic reactions are rash, itching, difficulty in breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. Consult your doctor immediately if you get any of the serious side effects.
