Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Glyset
Glyset is a glucosidase (converts carbohydrate to glucose) enzyme inhibitor drug. It acts by slowing down the conversion of carbohydrates (polysaccharides) to glucose (monosaccharide). By slowing down the conversion it reduces the blood sugar level in blood after a meal.
Therapeutic Uses of Glyset
Glyset is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, which is not controlled by diet alone. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral anti diabetic medicines or with insulin.
Direction of use of Glyset
Take Glyset as per direction of your physician:
- Glyset should be taken with the first major meal (breakfast or lunch) unless you doctor advice you otherwise.
- Do not crush, break or chew Glyset before swallowing it as a whole.
- Follow the diet and exercise plan that you get from your health care giver.
- If you are taking any antacid, charcoal or digestive enzyme preparations with Glyset, give a gap of 2 to 4 hours between these medications and Glyset.
- Insulin therapy may be required temporarily during stressful conditions like infection, fever, trauma or surgery.
If You Miss a Dose of Glyset
If you are taking Glyset regularly and miss a dose of it, take it as soon as you can. If you miss it for long and it is almost time for the next dose than skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing as usual. Never take 2 doses at a time without asking your doctor.
How to Store Glyset
Glyset should be stored at room temperature (68 to 77 degree F or 20 to 25 degree C. Store it away from light, moisture and heat. Keep Glyset in a tightly closed container and out of reach of children.
More Information About Glyset
If you do not get any result after taking Glyset for few days, consult your doctor. You may have to increase the dose or combine other anti diabetics. Do not share Glyset with anyone. It should be taken by the diabetic for whom it is prescribed.
Precautions to be Taken While Taking Glyset
Do not use Glyset if you have any of the following medical conditions and consult your doctor immediately:
- If you have allergy to any of the ingredients of Glyset.
- If you have diabetic ketoacidosis (acute emergency of diabetes due to high level of ketone bodies in blood).
- If you have kidney problems, intestinal obstruction etc.
- If you are suffering from chronic inflammation of bowel, colon ulcers, or any problem that can interfere with digestion and absorption of nutrients.
Some medical conditions may interact with Glyset. Inform your doctor or other health care provider if you any of the following problems you have that may interact with Glyset:
- If you are pregnant, planning have a baby, or if you are breast feeding.
- If you have any stomach problem, liver problem, kidney problems, intestinal problem etc.
- If you are allergic to any medicines, foods or any other substances.
- If you are taking any prescription medicine, non prescription medicine, any diet supplement or any herbal preparation.
Some medicines may interact with Glyset and you should inform if you are taking any other medicine, especially any of the following medicines:
- Digoxin, propranolol, or ranitidine etc. because the effectiveness of these medicines may be reduced by Glyset.
- Insulin and sulfonylureas, because side effects of these medicines may be increased by Glyset.
Possible Adverse Effects Glyset
- The most common side effects of Glyset are soft stool, diarrhea, stomach pain, bloating of stomach due to formation of gas etc. Consult your doctor if these common side effects become bothersome or last longer.
- The uncommon and severe side effects of Glyset are severe stomach pain, allergy to Glyset etc. The manifestations of allergic reaction are itching, skin rash, difficulty if breathing, chest discomfort, swelling of tongue, lips, mouth face etc.
