Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Imdur

Imdur is a nitrate and a vasodilator which causes dilatation of blood vessels, particularly in the heart. By widening the blood vessels it reduces the workload of heart and reduces chest pain, due to angina.

Therapeutic Uses of Imdur

Imdur is used in the prevention of angina chest pain.

Direction of use of Imdur

Take Imdur as per doctor’s advice. If you have any doubt about direction of use of Imdur, ask your doctor:

  • Imdur is taken orally with food or without food.
  • Imdur should be taken 2 times a day with 7 hours gap. Take the first dose of Imdur preferably in the morning after waking up, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
  • Imdur should not be stopped suddenly. It may increase the risk of angina attack. If you have to stop Imdur stop it gradually.

If You Miss a Dose of Imdur

If you miss a dose of Imdur you should take it as soon as you remember it. . If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Never take two doses of Imdur at a time.

How to Store Imdur

Imdur should be stored at room temperature (59 to 86 degrees F or 15 to 30 degrees C). Store it away from heat, moisture and sunlight. Keep the medicine out of reach of children.

If your symptoms of chest pain does not improve consult your doctor, chest pain may be due to other cause (other than angina). Imdur should be taken by the patient only for whom it is prescribed. Never should it be shared with anyone.

Precautions to be Taken While Taking Imdur

Do not use Imdur if you are suffering from any of the conditions listed below and consult your doctor:

  • If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Imdur or have allergy to any nitrate medicines.
  • If you drink alcohol regularly.
  • If you are taking drugs used for impotency like phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil).

Important notes about Imdur:

  • Imdur can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting etc. and these effects are increased by hot weather, alcohol, exercise and fever. Do not take alcohol or do heavy exercise while on Imdur. To prevent these side effects, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these side effects.
  • Do not take Imdur if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant during treatment with Imdur, consult your doctor and discuss about the risks of Imdur, if taken during pregnancy.
  • It is not clear if Imdur is secreted in the breast milk. If you are breast feeding or want to breast feed during use of Imdur, ask your doctor about the risk to your baby due to Imdur.
  • Do not drive or do risky works while on Imdur, which need constant monitoring until you are sure that you do not get side effects like dizziness, fainting and light headedness.
  • Headache may occur at the beginning of the treatment with Imdur and ask your doctor the ways to minimize or prevent the headache.
  • Imdur should not be used to treat the attack of an angina. It should only be sued for prevention of angina attack.
  • Do not use Imdur in children as the safety and effectiveness of Imdur is not established conclusively.
  • Imdur may interfere with some lab tests. Inform your doctor or other health care provider if you are taking it and have to do certain lab tests.

Possible Adverse Effects of Imdur

  • Consult your doctor if you have certain common side effects like nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness etc. and they become bothersome or persist for longer than usual.
  • If any serious side effects occur you should get immediate medical attention. The serious side effects are allergic reaction to Imdur, vision change, fainting, severe headache, persistent vomiting, sharp and crushing type of chest pain, shortness of breath, leg pain, fainting, numbness of hands or legs, severe stomach pain etc.
