Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Lamisil

Lamisil is an anti fungal medicine which acts by killing the sensitive fungi do not allow them to multiply.

Therapeutic Uses of Lamisil

Lamisil is used in the treatment of fungal infection of finger nails and toe nails.

Direction of use of Lamisil

Take Lamisil as your doctor directs you or you can take it orally on full stomach or on empty stomach. Depending on the fungal infection severity Lamisil is usually taken for 6 weeks to 12 weeks. You may see the maximum benefits of Lamisil, several months after discontinuation of it, because the outgrowth of healthy nail takes several months. Lamisil should be taken for the full course to clear the fungal infection completely and you should keep taking Lamisil even if you begin to see improvement before completing the full course of treatment with Lamisil.

If you get any doubt about the dosing and duration of treatment with Lamisil, you should consult your doctor or other health care provider.

If You Miss a Dose of Lamisil

If you miss a dose of Lamisil, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. If you miss more than one dose of Lamisil successively, you should consult your doctor. Do not take 2 doses of Lamisil at a time.

How to Store Lamisil

Lamisil should ideally be stored at 77 degree Fahrenheit or 25 degree Centigrade. Keep Lamisil away from heat, moisture and light. Keep all the medicine out of reach of children and pets. It should not be stored in the bathroom.

If you do not notice any improvement or there is worsening of symptoms after using Lamisil, you should ask your doctor. Lamisil should be used only by the patient who has fungal infection and for whom it is prescribed. It should not be shared with anyone.

Precautions/warnings to be Taken While Taking Lamisil

Do not use Lamisil if you get any of the problems that are listed below and consult your doctor immediately:

  • If you have allergy to any of the ingredients of Lamisil.
  • If you are suffering from any kidney problem or liver problem or if you have any history of these problems.

Some medical conditions may interact with Lamisil. Tell your doctor if you have any medical condition that may cause interaction with Lamisil. The following are the medical conditions that may interact with Lamisil:

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or if you are breast feeding your baby.
  • If you have allergy to any other medicine, food or other substance.
  • If your immune system is weak.
  • If you have history of kidney problem, lupus, psoriasis, or alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence.
  • If you are taking any prescription medicine, non prescription medicine or over the counter medicine, herbal medicine and any dietary supplement.

Some medicines may interact with Lamisil. If you are taking any medicine that may interact with Lamisil, consult your doctor immediately. The following are the medicines that may interact with Lamisil:

  • Medicines like cimetidine may increase the side effects Lamisil.
  • Medicines like rifampin may reduce the effectiveness of Lamisil.
  • Lamisil may decrease the effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects of oral anticoagulants like warfarin.
  • The risk of the side effects of the following medicines may be increased by Lamisil. The drugs are beta blockers like metoprolol; monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitors like selegiline; tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline; antiarrhythmics like flecainide, propafenone; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine etc.

Possible Adverse Effects of Lamisil

  • The common and minor side effects of Lamisil are diarrhea, headache, change in taste, indigestion, nausea etc. If any of these common and minor side effects becomes bothersome and persistent you should consult your doctor.
  • If you get any serious and uncommon side effect you should consult your doctor immediately. Serious side effects of Lamisil are redness of skin, blistering of skin, peeling of skin, and swollen skin; unusual bruising and/or bleeding; vision changes; symptoms of infection like fever, sore throat and chills; symptoms of liver disease like dark urine, loss of appetite, pale stools; stomach pain, unexplained and persistent nausea; unusual tiredness; vomiting; yellowing of the skin or eyes and severe allergic reaction. Severe allergic reaction is manifested by rash, hives, itching, difficulty in breathing, tightness in chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, unusual hoarseness of voice etc.
