Drug Class and Mechanism of Action of Kytril
Kytril is an agent that blocks the serotonin receptor (5 HT3 receptor). Serotonin is released from small intestine during cancer chemotherapy or due to some other cause and this trigger vomiting. So, if the mechanism which triggers vomiting is blocked by Kytril it can prevent vomiting or reduce vomiting.
Therapeutic Uses of Kytril
Kytril is an anti emetic (medicine which prevent vomiting) agent. Kytril is commonly used in the treatment of cancer chemotherapy or radiation induced vomiting. It can also be used in other types of vomiting. Kytril can also be used in other conditions as your doctor determines.
Direction of use of Kytril
Use Kytril as your doctor tells you. Unless your doctor tells you, it should be used 1 hour before you receive cancer chemotherapy and 12 hours later, on the day of chemotherapy. It is not required on the days when you do not receive chemotherapy.
If You Miss a Dose of Kytril
If you miss a dose of Kytril you should consult your doctor for a new dosing schedule. Never take 2 doses of Kytril at a time.
How to Store Kytril
Kytril should be stored at room temperature (59 to 86 degrees F or 15 to 30 degrees C). It should be stored away from moisture, heat and light in a tightly closed container. Keep it away from children.

Never share this medicine with others for whom it is not prescribed. Kytril should not be used to treat other conditions unless your doctor tells you. If you have any question about Kytril you should consult your doctor to clarify your doubt.
Precautions to be Taken While Taking Kytril
- Kytril should be used only on the day you take your anti cancer chemotherapy or use it when your doctor tell you to take.
- For women: If you are pregnant you should not take Kytril. If you are planning to become pregnant you should discuss about the risk of using Kytril during pregnancy. It is not clear if Kytril is secreted in the breast milk. If you are breast feeding or planning to breast feed you should discuss with your doctor about the risk to your baby if you breast feed while taking Kytril.
- Kytril may cause dizziness and drowsiness. If you are taking Kytril you should not drive or operate machinery that need constant monitoring and attention. You can do these works if you become certain that Kytril do not cause dizziness and drowsiness. If you are taking alcohol or other medicines that can cause dizziness, the drowsiness and dizziness caused by Kytril will be also increased. So you should avoid alcohol while taking Kytril.
- If you feel nauseated or get vomiting continuously you should consult your doctor or other health care provider.
Possible Adverse Effects of Kytril
- The common and minor side effects of Kytril are nausea, diarrhea or constipation, headache, fever, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, anxiety, weakness, stomach pain etc. These common side effects usually go away after some time during treatment. If these common and minor side effects become bothersome and persistent, you should consult your doctor or other health care provider.
- Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the serious side effects of Kytril. The serious side effects of Kytril are fast and irregular heart beat (arrhythmia), chest pain, fainting, muscle stiffness, allergic reaction etc.
- A severe allergic reaction to Kytril is unlikely, but if you experience allergic reaction you should get immediate medical attention. Symptoms of allergic reaction are rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, difficulty in breathing etc.
- If you get any other side effects that are not listed above, you should consult your doctor immediately.
