First aid

Severe bleeding

The first thing is cleaning. It has to be done before anything so that infection does not spread. Just clean the wound properly with clean hands. To avoid the risk, put on some gloves, so that the chances of infection are reduced very much. Sometime organs displace from their original positions. Just don’t try to push them to where they belong to because this might increase the trouble. Also cover the wound properly.

The following instructions may guide you to be more careful when bleeding rate is high:

1. Make the person with injury to lie down. The position should be such that the height of the head is less than the legs. This way more blood flows into the brain and the chances of fainting and losing consciousness are very small. Generally a good practice is to keep the injured part of the body at a height greater than other body parts. This reduces the blood loss in the person.

2. The prime requirement is to stop the flow of blood. For this do not try to remove any debris or any objects that are attached to the wound deeply. Minor cleaning of dirt should be done for better healing.

3. Pressure is to be applied on the wound itself. Anything that is clean such as a bandage or a cloth or dressing could be used for this purpose. Even the hand can be used to serve the purpose.

4. The pressure is to be continuously applied till the moment the bleeding stops completely. It might take some 20 minutes for this to happen. A bandage or an adhesive tape can be used to bind the wound very tightly and maintain the pressure on it. Just don't keep looking for whether the bleeding has stopped.

5. Make sure that the bandage is firm. If the blood continues to flow without stopping, and then make sure you do not remove the bandage and the dressing. Add some extra material that can even apply more pressure and absorb some amount of blood.

6. The bleeding has to be stopped at any cost and thus you have to go for indirect methods of doing so if the direct ones do not work out properly. This includes applying pressure on the artery that delivers blood to the wound. This would stop the supply of blood to the wound and thus bleeding might not continue after a while.

7. Make sure the injured parts of the body do not move a lot. The moment you stop the bleeding, make arrangements of taking the injured person to a hospital.

Internal bleeding is highly dangerous and 911 have to be called for the purpose. Just look for its signs here:
