Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds are common problems. Sometimes, they are nuisance and sometimes they are true medical problem. Sometimes, they can be both. They occur not only among adults and children but also among older people.
These nosebleeds, among young adults and children, generally occur or originate from the septum which is generally situated inside the nose separating the nasal chambers. However, these nosebleeds, in middle aged and older adults, occur not only from the septum but also from deep inside the interior of the nose. However, originating nosebleeds from the nose’s interior is less common. Arteries which are hardened or high blood pressure cause these nosebleeds. They are characterized spontaneous occurring and are generally difficult to stop. The assistance of a specialist is required.
Nosebleed can be taken care of by following these tips:
- By reducing the blood pressure in the veins of the nose, you can avoid nosebleeds. So, sitting upright and leaning forward will decrease the blood pressure and reducing the bleeding further. Swallowing the blood will irritate your stomach and hence avoid swallowing by sitting forward.
- Breathe through your mouth by pinching the nose using the thumb and index finger. Continuing this maneuver for about five to ten minutes will send pressure to the bleeding point and often stops blood flow in nasal septum.
- Once the bleeding has been stopped, you should prevent it from being started again. Picking or blowing your nose may cause re-bleeding. Bending down should be avoided for several hours after the bleeding has been stopped. Always, your head should be kept higher than your heart’s level.
- If the bleeding starts again, blow out your nose forcefully and clear out the blood clots. By using Oxymetazoline containing spray (Afrin, Neo-Synephrine, and others), spray on both sides of your nose. Pinching the nose technique can again be practiced.
However, the medical care should be sought immediately, if you observe these symptoms:
1. If there is bleeding for a period of more than 20 minutes.
2. During the nose bleeding, if you met with an accident or if an injury occurs to your head or nose which results in breaking of your nose.
Frequent nosebleeds:
For frequent nosebleeds, it is advisable to meet your doctor for treatment. The doctor will get your problem causing blood vessel get cauterized. In the method of cautery, the respective blood vessels are burnt with electric current, laser or a silver nitrate. He may pack your nose with special gauze or balloon which inflatable. This will put pressure on your nose and hence bleeding is stopped.
If you are suffering from nasal bleeding and taking medication such as Aspirin or Warfarin which are blood thinners, then it is always advisable to contact your doctor. He may suggest alternative medication.
The risk of nosebleed will be increased if you use supplemental oxygen which is administered using a nasal tube. Instead, a lubricant which is water-based can be used. Also, increase the humidity in your house to get relief.
