Motion sickness

Most people, while travelling, feel sudden uneasiness which slowly turns into dizziness and vomiting sensation. This type of sickness is being called as Motion Sickness. Motion sickness can be caused due to any type of motion. Motion sickness will normally come suddenly.

First, you will feel bit uneasiness and later on, it progresses to a cold sweat and dizziness. It is followed by vomiting. This feeling is being called as Motion Sickness and this calms down as soon as you stop travelling. However, you will get adjusted to the following as you travel more and more. During the initial stages, one feels motion sickness but as the journey goes on, the sickness goes on disappearing.

One can escape from the motion sickness by planning the journey ahead. There are few seats where the motion is least felt. So, reserve these seas before travelling.

These can be:

  • In the ships, motion is least felt in the front and middle cabins or the cabins on the upper deck. Request for these cabins.
  • In the planes, there will be seats in the front edge of the wing. In these places, there are less chances of having uneasiness feeling. Request for these seats.
  • In the automobiles, front seats are the best for one to avoid motion sickness.
     

The following points should be taken care of while travelling, especially if you are prone to motion sickness:

  • It is better to avoid reading names on various objects that pass across while travelling. Always, focus on distant objects or horizon. These objects will normally look to be stationary. Don’t try to focus on moving objects.
  • Do not move your head frequently. Rest your head against the seat back and keep it still.
  • Smoking also causes motion sickness. So, avoid smoking. Also, avoid sitting next to smokers.
  • Eating habits also influence motion sickness. Spicy and greasy foods should be avoided. Drinking should also be avoided. Overeating the food also cause motion sickness. So, avoid overeating.
  • Meclizine (Antivert, Bonine) containing over-the-counter antihistamine or dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) containing one should be taken 30 to 60 minutes prior to your travel. However, these medications cause drowsiness. So, be prepared for it.
  • Try using scopolamine (Transderm Scop) which can be available in an adhesive patch. This patch can be applied behind your ear several hours prior to your travelling. This patch can give you protection for about 72 hours. But, if you are suffering from problems like urine retention, asthma or glaucoma, then take the advice of your doctor before applying this patch.
  • When you become ill, take dry crackers. Beverages which are carbonated should be taken. These will settle down your stomach.
  • Engaging yourself in some kind of aesthetic work which makes you relaxed. It can be like listening to music. This will divert your attention and makes you calm. If you follow these tips, you will surely come out of the dizziness and uneasiness feeling caused due to the motion sickness and your travel can be memorable.
